Suck on this New Mexico, it’s Dick Morris of Citizens United on the phone!

“Please stay on the line for an important message from Dick Morris of Citizens United.”

That’s just part of what an untold number of New Mexicans heard in a campaign phone blitz this week.

By all accounts, the call was slickly produced and deployed.

The caller would ask for a specific person in the household. Let’s call her Mrs. Wellington. Once it was confirmed that Mrs. Wellington was indeed on the line, the caller would introduce himself:

“Hello, I’m Gil from Citizens United.”

Oh yes, this is the same Citizens United that won a recent 5-4 Supreme Court decision — Citizens United V. Federal Election Commission — which struck down much of the McCain-Feingold Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act of 2002 law along with overturning Teddy Roosevelt era bans on corporate campaign contributions. By conferring on corporations the same rights as an individual (corporate personhood), the decision now allows them to open up their treasuries and completely buy up all television time, thus potentially drowning out drown out everyone else’s voices in political campaigns.

But let’s get to Gil on the phone with Mrs. Wellington. After a brief riff on how President Obama has “taken your health care away from you,” Gil asked Mrs. Wellington to stay on the line to hear an important message from “Dick Morris of Citizens United.”

Then a recording of the Fox News pollster/guru and noted toe sucking fetishist, Dick Morris, commenced.

Dick got right to the point. “The administration of Barack Obama is the most radical in American history.” Decrying the “socialism” of “Reid, Pelosi and Obama,” Morris explained that we must rally Americans in a campaign “to take back America.”

From the Morris Playbook…

Channel Sarah Palin: “Obama will create panels to curb medical care to the elderly.”

Higher costs coming, be afraid: “The recently-passed health care legislation will mean higher premiums for most Americans.” (see PoliFact fact check)

On proposed new financial regulation for Wall Street: “Even Castro doesn’t have those powers.”

BUT, there’s hope New Mexico. “But we (Citizens United) have a series of excellent, hard-hitting ads ready to go right now.”

Then the Gil fellow got back on the line. “Mrs. Wellington, could you hear the message from Dick Morris all right?”

Mrs. Wellington heard it just fine, thank you. And she was deeply concerned.

Gil cut to the chase: “Mrs. Wellington, as you may know, Citizens United is the organization that recently defeated Barack Obama in the Supreme Court.” (See above. The Citizens United V. Federal Election Commission decision had nothing to do with President Obama.)

According to Gil, Citizens United new campaign is to rally America to oust Michigan Congressman Bart Stupak who had cast a key vote in the final passage of “Obamacare.”

And then THE ASK:

“Our PAC is working 24/7 to defeat Bart Stupak. But Mrs. Wellington, we can’t start running our ads without your support. That’s why your contribution of $100 or $200 will enable us to start airing these ads immediately. Can we count on your support today?”

Mrs. Wellington got the Citizens United/Dick Morris call on Wednesday.

Now just coincidentally, that was the same day the Fox News promoted organization, Tea Party Express, announced that it was “targeting Stupak.”

And then on Friday, Stupak announced that he would not seek re-election this year.

Here’s more on the Tea Party Express – Fox News victory lap.

And as for Citizens United, here’s one of their TV spots from the 2008 campaign:
