Memorial to Ensure Accurate 2020 Census Count Advances House State Government, Elections and Indian Affairs Committee

Santa Fe, N.M.Today, a memorial supporting the efforts for an accurate census count passed the House State Government, Elections and Indian Affairs Committee. House Memorial 6 (HM 6), sponsored by Rep. Tomás Salazar (D – District 70) and Rep. Roybal-Caballero (D – District 13), calls for the investment in robust outreach efforts across New Mexico in preparation for the 2020 Census, increasing participation in the decennial census and lowering the chances for a population undercount.

Oriana Sandoval, CEO for the Center for Civic Policy (CCP), said,

“The 2020 Census represents over $7 billion in federal aid at stake to maintain essential programs for our families’ wellbeing like: SNAP, Medicaid, Section 8, Transportation, Early Ed and many others.

“HM 6 is a good step to ensure there is an accurate count of NM’s families and children by beefing up the support for the Census preparations that are already underway.  By taking immediate action, we can help to ensure every New Mexican family receives their fair share of representation and federal funding for vital public services for the next 10 years”.
